12 Things You Should Know Before We Work Together

Updated: Aug 21, 2020

Want to know the FAQs? Here I'll answer 12 of the most frequently asked web design questions I get on the regular.

1. Can't I just do this all myself {design my own website, that is}?

Short Answer: If you have the time and expert skills, by all means, go for it. But, it will probably cost you more in the long-run.

Long Answer: If you go the DIY route, you could spend hundreds of hours trying to piece a website together. If you don't have the skills {not judging} you can easily sink thousands into an online course to prep you on digital marketing and web design basics. I've heard horror stories of newbies making websites without a strategy in place and expecting customers to magically appear on their website.

There's also a good chance that you could get stuck. Something may not work the way you want, or there might be bugs that you have to work around, which could lead you to reach out to an expert anyway. If you plan on farming parts of it out, like hiring a copywriter, marketer or graphic designer, be aware of fees and project timelines. These vary, but those in high demand take months and you're looking at having to coordinate with multiple people/companies as well as various fees.

SIDEBAR: If you have your doubts, I would encourage you to do some more digging. Research different options to get a sense of those you're partnering with, the quality of their final work product and if it fits into your timeline.

2. Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! Monthly payment plans are available. On smaller projects, I usually take half down to start and the rest when we wrap up. But, I get that sometimes that doesn’t work for everyone, so that's where the payment plans come in. I’m happy to work something out on an individual basis as long as everything is paid in full by an agreed timeframe.

3. Where does the $250 deposit fit in?

Great question, the nonrefundable $250 deposit secures your spot on my calendar and will be deducted from the total project amount if everything goes as planned. Since I only work with a handful of clients at a time, this prevents cancellations and allows me to stay on track.

4. Are there additional fees?

Yes, prices do NOT include annual domain and Wix web hosting fees. Those can be found here. Three things to note about Wix:

  • I'm happy to make a plan recommendation as we discuss your project goals.

  • Each plan includes a free domain for the first year so no need to purchase one elsewhere {plus you'll have everything in one spot}.

  • Typically, I process the initial Wix fees and charge them back to you. As a Wix Partner {not bragging, I promise} I receive occasional discounts and exclusive offers that only I can cash in on. Once your website is live, I will transfer ownership over to you, and you'll be responsible for any future annual fees.

5. What if I already own a domain?

That's okay! We can do one of two things:

  • Transfer it over to Wix {If you're up for renewal and would like everything in one spot.}

  • Connect to your external provider {Keep who you have it with and still select a Wix plan.}

Remember, each Wix plan includes a free domain for a year.

6. Wow, that’s still a big investment / Why Wix?

I hear you, but if you're really committed to growing your business, it's something to consider. Wix allows me to take a grassroots approach to website creation, keeping costs low compared to what an agency or larger web design company would charge. I can also turn projects around a lot faster. My clients like to have the flexibility of adding content on their own and making minor changes without being charged for it. If you're still on the fence, I encourage you to shop around and see what's out there!

7.What if I’ve never worked with a designer before?

Awww, that's really sweet and also nothing to worry about. I'm happy to answer any questions you have and will take you step-by-step through the process. Open communication is key and I'm only an email away.

8. When is the best time to book my project?

When you're ready! Even though I will do the heavy lifting, this is a partnership and I'll still need a few things from you along the way like...

  • a completed website planner

  • signed contract

  • project elements

  • feedback

This means you'll need to keep an eye on your email and could get in touch within a few hours if needed {day max}.

9. What if I need to reschedule after we book a project?

That’s a hard one. I get that stuff happens {especially as a parent} and I’m willing to reschedule the best I can around my other clients. Keep in mind, they'll have priority for the time booked so I can stay on schedule. Remember, your deposit locks in that time on the calendar, so if you can, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance and we'll go from there. If it's a reoccurring issue, you'll have to pay a rebooking fee, which is the same as the initial deposited amount.

10. Is there a contract?

Yes! If we decide to move forward, I will email a service agreement for you to sign that will have everything in writing along with our next steps.

11. Do I have to be a mom to work with you?

Ha, no. In the past, I've designed for all sorts of businesses and started Grassroots based on referrals. My business literally grew client-to-client, project-to-project. So, if you heard about me from a referral, let me know.

12. I don’t use Wix. Can you still help me?

Yes ma'am! I can still workup project copy, help out with your initial brand and get a strategy mapped out. Wix would only come into play if you want me to design your website and teach you how to use it. General consulting services are also available upon request.
